A THANK YOU LETTER TO JWS MINISTRIES
From the Desk of:
David Martin, Executive Vice President
John,
The MRC led coalition, Citizens Against Religious Bigotry
(CARB), has just announced a stunning victory: convincing
hundreds of advertisers not to sponsor Comedy Central’s
proposed “JC” animated comedy and its shockingly offensive
characterization of Jesus Christ.
In addition to the intensive letter writing and phone
campaign, members of the coalition also spoke directly
with representatives from most of the corporations that
received the original letter.
Not one single sponsor indicated any intention
to buy advertising time on the “JC” program
if it ever made it to Comedy Central’s air!
+ + Grassroots Americans Rally Against Religious Bigotry
Immediately after Comedy Central announced plans to air “JC”
an animated program that openly mocked Christians and
Christianity last month, MRC founder Brent Bozell sounded
the alarm, and MRC Action team members responded in
resounding fashion – with more than 117,000 citizens
signing our petition within days — urging Viacom and
Comedy Central to cancel their plans for “JC”!
“The sponsors understand what the programming department
at Comedy Central does not: Religious bigotry is bad
business,” said Brent, who is also the founder of CARB.
“With literally zero advertiser support for this program,
the only reason Comedy Central would put it on their
broadcast schedule is in an effort to offend Christianity
and Christians. There is no valid business reason for
airing ‘JC’”.
In light of this exciting grassroots victory against Comedy
Central, Brent has announced that the advertiser outreach
will “stand down.” However, he cautioned, “In the event
that any advertiser changes its mind, that advertiser and
its executives will be publicly called to account for
supporting anti-Christian bigotry.”
While this was a collaborative effort including more
than 20 organizations, the formation of CARB and
the subsequent actions would not have taken place
without the robust support of the MRC Action team!
The feedback and passion of the Action team during
the initial announcement of Comedy Central’s
plans compelled the MRC, and specifically Brent,
to take aggressive action.
In other words, this victory would not have happened without
you, John!
On behalf of the entire MRC family, we thank you for your
outstanding efforts – for signing our petition, rallying
friends, making phone calls and sending emails.
However, it is important to note that Comedy Central
has not yet cancelled plans for their proposed “JC”
show, so we need to remain prepared to act should
they decide to move ahead.
